Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced several measures designed to conserve the nation’s natural gas supplies and reduce consumption. The impetus for the announcement was Russia reducing natural gas flows through one of its pipelines supplying gas to Germany. Germany is attempting to wean the nation off of Russian gas and oil as a sanction imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine.

John Kerry, President Biden's "special envoy for climate," sent a clear message to the leaders of large oil firms at a recent energy conference. Kerry strongly urged Big Oil to embrace clean energy or wind up being left behind with a "lot of stranded assets." He encouraged these firms to rethink their missions and begin viewing themselves as energy companies and not oil-and-gas firms.

Tesla Will Start Selling Cars in India Next Year, Government Says (Micro News for December 26, 2020 – January 1, 2021)

India's transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, announced that Tesla would begin selling electric cars there in 2021. Tesla will also evaluate manufacturing vehicles in India after the firm's sales centers are established. Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla would enter India in 2021 but declined to say when the cars would be available for purchase.

Green Recovery or ‘Nightmare’ for Trade? Europe Wants to Tax Emissions from Ships (Micro News for August 15, 2020 – August 21, 2020)

The European Commission proposed taxing ship emissions to raise funds to help rebuild the EU economy damaged by the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU is focusing rebuilding efforts on a “green recovery” in its “bid to become the first carbon-neutral continent.” However, the proposed tax is opposed by the shipping industry which forecasts the tax would kindle new rounds of trade disputes between the EU and non-EU countries.
